Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, confirm what is actually requesting nxlame.1.dll.
- Which program fails? The file is associated with Mausau’s audio plugins for Nero Burning ROM, especially the LAME MP3 plugin for Nero. It is not a Windows system file.
- When does the error appear? Note whether it occurs when Nero starts, while importing or converting audio, or during Windows startup after Nero has been removed.
- What is the full message? Common reported variants include “nxlame.1.dll not found,” “The file nxlame.1.dll is missing,” and “The specified module could not be found.” The last message can also indicate a missing dependency.
- What is the executable path? In Task Manager or Event Viewer, check whether the failing executable belongs to Nero or an old Nero-related utility.
- Is Windows 64-bit while Nero is old 32-bit software? Windows architecture and application architecture are separate. A 32-bit Nero process needs a compatible 32-bit plugin.
- Did antivirus quarantine the file? Check protection history before attempting a reinstall.
- Do you still use Nero for this audio workflow? If not, removing the obsolete plugin or Nero installation may be safer than restoring it.
The safest first action is to repair or reinstall the exact Nero installation and its audio-plugin package. Do not begin by downloading a standalone DLL or copying one into System32.

What nxlame.1.dll is
nxlame.1.dll is associated with Mausau’s audio plugins for Nero Burning ROM. Its description is commonly given as “Lame MP3 plugin for Nero,” and historical references attribute the plugin to [email protected].

C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadAudioPlugins
The exact folder depends on the Nero edition, Windows installation, and whether the software was 32-bit. The important point is that this is an application plugin, not a Windows component.
It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The filename is also seen in public references as nxLame.dll or nxlame.dll. Public metadata is inconsistent about whether nxlame.1.dll is a canonical filename or a packaged or renamed copy. That inconsistency is another reason not to identify a replacement by filename alone.
There is no reliable evidence that the file is:
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET assembly
- An ActiveX or COM server
- A protected Windows system file
Reinstalling those Microsoft components will not normally recreate this Nero plugin.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the Nero installation
This is the most likely solution when Nero still appears in the error message or the failure occurs while using Nero.
Find the program that requests the file
- Reproduce the error and write down the complete message.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select the Details tab.
- Look for a Nero executable or the program named in the error.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Record the folder path and executable name.
If the failing program is no longer installed, check for an orphaned shortcut or startup entry:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Startup and review entries associated with Nero.
- Open Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Nero and related audio-plugin entries.
- If Nero is absent but the error appears during startup, disable the obsolete startup item and restart Windows.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
text
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the problem occurred.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and application path.
The path tells you whether Windows is loading the file for Nero, an old Nero helper, or an unrelated program that has a stale reference.
Repair from Installed apps
Some Nero editions provide a repair option.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Nero.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant Nero entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the same Nero operation.
If there is no Repair button, open Control Panel:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the Nero product.
- Choose Change or Repair, if the installer provides it.
- Complete the wizard using the original installation media or installer.
- Restart Windows.
A successful repair should restore the matching Nero audio-plugin files to Nero’s own plugin directory. The error should disappear when the same Nero action is repeated.
If the repair completes but the error remains, do not copy a DLL from another machine. Continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall Nero and its complete audio-plugin package
A missing file may be only one part of a damaged plugin set. Reinstalling a single DLL can leave behind mismatched files or missing dependencies.

Preserve settings and records first
Before uninstalling, record:
- Nero product name and edition
- Installation folder
- The exact error text
- The failing executable path
- Whether the error began after cleanup software, an update, or antivirus activity
- The location of any original Nero installer, disc, backup, or license information
If Nero contains project files, copy those personal files to a separate location. Do not copy DLLs from another installation as a substitute for the installer.
Remove the damaged installation
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Nero.
- Remove the affected Nero product and any separate Nero audio-plugin entry.
- Restart Windows.
- If the old entry is not listed, open
appwiz.cpland check there. - Do not manually delete unrelated files from
System32orSysWOW64.
If an uninstaller asks whether to retain settings, retaining them is reasonable for a repair attempt. For a clean rebuild, remove the application and reinstall from the original trusted package.

Use the original Nero installer, a trusted organizational software archive, or a current installer obtained directly from Nero. For the historical Mausau plugin, the original source is not currently verified as available or authentic, so do not treat a random archive as an official replacement.
If the plugin was installed separately from Nero:
- Locate the original complete plugin package.
- Scan the archive before opening it.
- Confirm that it came from a source you trust.
- Install the complete package using its installer, if it has one.
- If the package only contains files, follow its original Nero-specific installation instructions.
- Place the files only in the Nero audio-plugin directory selected by that package.
Do not mix nxLame.dll, nxlame.dll, and nxlame.1.dll from unrelated downloads. A matching filename does not prove matching version, architecture, dependencies, or provenance.
Test the installation
After reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Nero normally.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
- Test audio import, conversion, or encoding only if that was the original failing operation.
- Check that the plugin directory contains the complete package rather than only one DLL.
If Nero starts but fails during an audio operation, the file may now be present while a dependent DLL remains missing. Continue to the dependency and architecture checks below.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old plugin because it is unusual, unsigned, packed, or located in an obsolete application directory. Do not automatically whitelist it.
Review the detection
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand detections that occurred when the Nero error began.
- Read the detected file path, threat name, action, and timestamp.
- Compare the path with Nero’s installation or audio-plugin directory.
If the item is clearly from the original Nero installation and you have verified the installer or backup, restore it only after confirming that the complete package is trusted. Microsoft documents Protection History and the consequences of restoring quarantined items in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.
If the file came from an unknown DLL website, a modified archive, or an unexpected temporary folder, leave it quarantined and remove the package. Obtain a clean Nero installer instead.
If Windows Security detects the restored file again, do not repeatedly allow it. Scan the original installer, update security definitions, and seek a maintained Nero release or an alternative audio workflow.

Fix 4: Check whether the error really means a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that nxlame.1.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This commonly happens when:
- A plugin was copied without the rest of its package
- Nero was moved to another drive
- A cleanup utility removed an old supporting file
- A 32-bit application is loading an incompatible library
- The plugin came from a different Nero or plugin version
The safest diagnostic path is a clean reinstall of the complete Nero and plugin package. A qualified technician can also inspect the application’s dependency chain using appropriate analysis tools. Avoid downloading individual runtime DLLs based on a dependency error.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because the missing item ends in .dll. Install a runtime only when the Nero installer, its documentation, or a clearly identified dependency requires that runtime.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Old Nero releases and their audio plugins are generally from the 32-bit software era. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it must load compatible 32-bit plugins.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
To check the application path, return to the Nero executable:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the Nero process.
- Choose Open file location.
- Note whether it is installed under a legacy application directory or a program-specific folder.
Do not infer the plugin architecture from Windows alone. A 64-bit Windows installation does not make a 32-bit Nero plugin into a 64-bit DLL.
Public DLL indexes disagree about the architecture, version, and size of this file, so those values should not be used to select a download. Reinstall the matching plugin package for the exact Nero installation instead.
Fix 6: Remove the orphaned plugin if Nero is no longer used
If Nero was removed but Windows still reports the error, an old shortcut, scheduled task, service, or startup reference may be trying to launch a Nero component.
Remove the installed application entry
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Nero and related Nero utilities.
- Uninstall entries you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
Check startup applications
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable obsolete Nero entries.
- Restart Windows.
Check Task Scheduler carefully
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
text
taskschd.msc
- Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that clearly refer to Nero.
- Check the Actions tab before disabling anything.
- Disable only an obsolete Nero task that you have identified.
If the error stops after removing the orphaned reference, restoring the DLL was unnecessary. This is often the cleanest result when the old audio workflow is no longer required.

Fix 7: Use Windows repair only for wider Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Nero plugin, and SFC cannot retrieve a missing file that was never part of Windows component storage.
Use these commands when other Windows symptoms are present, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, corrupted system components, or multiple unrelated Windows errors.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe expected result is a repaired Windows component store or protected system file. It is not a new copy of nxlame.1.dll.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting feel like guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix for this application-specific plugin.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update or replace the obsolete workflow
This plugin belongs to an old Nero audio-plugin ecosystem. Compatibility with current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations should not be assumed.
If Nero is still required:
- Check the Nero product’s official support and installer records.
- Install the latest compatible Nero release available to you.
- Use the installer’s own audio components rather than copying historical plugin files.
- Test the exact audio workflow after installation.
- Run Nero with administrator rights only when the installer or application requires it.
If Nero is no longer required, replace the workflow with a maintained application that supports the needed audio format. This avoids restoring a legacy plugin whose original distribution and compatibility are no longer verified.

For a driver-related problem elsewhere on the same machine, manually hunting through hardware vendors and matching driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify available updates, while installation is handled by the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling Nero or its audio plugin.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
Microsoft explains the utility’s purpose in its regsvr32 command documentation. There is no verified evidence that nxlame.1.dll is an ActiveX or COM server or that it implements the required registration functions.

Therefore, do not start with:
regsvr32 nxlame.1.dll
A registration error would not prove that the file is corrupt. It may simply mean that the Nero plugin is not designed to be registered. Application plugins are normally found and loaded by the application from its own plugin directory.

Random DLL download sites create several problems:
- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- The architecture may not match the Nero process.
- The file may belong to a different plugin version.
- Required companion files may still be missing.
- A similarly named file may not be the same component.
- Copying it into a system directory can cause unrelated applications to load the wrong library.
- It does not repair a damaged Nero installation or remove a stale startup reference.
There is no verified current vendor download package for this exact filename. Use the original Nero installer, a known-good backup, or a trusted organizational software archive. If the original plugin package cannot be verified, removing the obsolete plugin or changing the audio workflow is safer than installing a standalone DLL.
When to use System Restore
Use System Restore only when:
- The problem began after a system-wide change.
- A restore point predates the failure.
- The Nero installer or original plugin package is unavailable.
- Broader Windows behavior also changed.
To open it:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Choose a different restore point, if offered.
- Select a point from before the problem.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, installed applications, drivers, and settings. It does not recreate a trustworthy third-party plugin from nowhere, and it does not replace personal files. Microsoft describes the broader recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.
Frequently asked questions
Is nxlame.1.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Mausau’s audio plugins for Nero Burning ROM. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which program usually requests it?
An old Nero Burning ROM installation or Nero-related audio workflow usually requests it. Confirm the executable path rather than relying only on the filename in the error message.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No evidence identifies it as a Microsoft runtime component. Reinstalling those packages is not the direct fix unless a separate dependency is specifically identified.
Why does the filename contain .1?
Public references use several names, including nxLame.dll, nxlame.dll, and nxlame.1.dll. The suffix may reflect a packaged or renamed copy. Public metadata is not consistent enough to use it as a version identifier.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. This is an application plugin, and there is no verified evidence that it supports DLL registration.
Will SFC restore the file?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore a third-party Nero plugin.
What if Windows says the module could not be found?
The named file may be missing, or one of its dependencies may be unavailable. Reinstall the complete matching Nero/plugin package rather than adding random DLLs.
What if antivirus removed it?
Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore or allow the file only when its original package and provenance are trusted. Do not whitelist an unknown download.
What details should I collect before asking for help?
Record the full error, failing executable path, Nero edition, Windows version, plugin directory, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and any antivirus action. These details distinguish a missing file from a dependency, architecture, or stale-startup problem.
