  1. Ways to keep track of something digitally.
  2. Done for another person’s benefit or support.
  3. Related to a particular sport.
  4. Look at the final letters: each word closes with the name of a Greek letter.

How Connections works

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four. The groups are marked yellow, green, blue, and purple, from easiest to trickiest. The New York Times Help Center notes that each puzzle has exactly one solution, while words may appear to fit more than one category.

  • Mark online for later: BOOKMARK, FAVORITE, LIKE, SAVE.
  • Behalf: ADVANTAGE, BENEFIT, INTEREST, SAKE.
  • NBA legends, familiarly: BIRD, CURRY, KOBE, MAGIC.
  • Ending with Greek letters: BIOTA, FETA, MOCHI, PEPSI.

Why the last group fits

The final category is about the ending of each word: BIOTA ends in eta, FETA ends in eta, MOCHI ends in chi, and PEPSI ends in psi. Those are Greek-letter names, not a shared meaning among the four words.

Can you still play the September 12, 2024 puzzle?

The daily Connections puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available on the web and in the NYT Games app. The New York Times Help Center says the full Connections archive extends back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archived play can affect some statistics but not streaks, and a completed archived puzzle cannot be replayed. Archive access terms may change, so check the current Help Center information before relying on access.

An NYT account can retain progress across devices, according to the Help Center; account-based progress retention is separate from access to the subscriber-limited full archive.
