Spoilers below: These are the complete categories and their four words.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Kinds of shirts | FLANNEL, OXFORD, POLO, TEE |
| Green | Spheres in milk tea | BOBA, BUBBLE, PEARL, TAPIOCA |
| Blue | Marine invertebrates, familiarly | CORAL, JELLY, SPONGE, STAR |
| Purple | Starts of pasta names | FETT, PENN, TORTE, ZIT |
Why the groups fit
Yellow: kinds of shirts
FLANNEL, OXFORD, POLO, and TEE are all shirt types.
Green: spheres in milk tea
BOBA, BUBBLE, PEARL, and TAPIOCA point to the round pearls or toppings used in milk tea. BUBBLE and PEARL may suggest ocean imagery, but here they belong with the drink-related words.
#1 Best Overall
Blue: marine invertebrates, familiarly
CORAL and SPONGE are familiar names for marine organisms; JELLY and STAR stand for jellyfish and starfish or sea stars.
Purple: starts of pasta names
Each entry is a fragment that completes into a pasta name: FETT becomes fettuccine, PENN becomes penne, TORTE becomes tortellini, and ZIT becomes ziti. This category asks you to supply the rest of each word rather than match four complete pasta names.
What made this puzzle tricky
BUBBLE and PEARL can appear to fit a marine theme, creating overlap with CORAL and STAR. The distinction is that the four milk-tea words form a set of toppings, while the marine group includes CORAL, JELLY, SPONGE, and STAR. When a word seems to fit more than one theme, check whether the association produces exactly four entries before locking in the group.
