Spoilers: The complete four groups are below.
| Category | Entries | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| UTOPIA | PARADISE; SEVENTH HEAVEN; SHANGRI-LA; XANADU | Each can name or evoke an ideal, heavenly, or legendary place. |
| THINGS YOU SHAKE | HAIRSPRAY; MAGIC 8 BALL; SALAD DRESSING; SNOWGLOBE | These are shaken before use, to mix their contents, or to produce their expected effect. |
| PROPER NOUN PORTMANTEAUX | JAZZERCISE; PARALYMPICS; POKÉMON; WIKIPEDIA | The puzzle groups these named entities as blended or compressed names. The category establishes the intended grouping; it does not require a detailed etymology for each name. |
| ENDING IN SYNONYMS FOR “FRIEND” | KETCHUM; PAYPAL; PRIMATE; ROSEBUD | The endings are CHUM, PAL, MATE, and BUD—informal words for a friend or companion. |
The four labels and all sixteen entries are also listed by News9live’s December 11, 2024 answer guide. The listed colors or sequence are not a required solving order.

How the groups connect
Ideal places
PARADISE, SEVENTH HEAVEN, SHANGRI-LA, and XANADU all suggest a perfect or dreamlike place. The set combines familiar expressions with legendary or literary names.
Things to shake
HAIRSPRAY, MAGIC 8 BALL, SALAD DRESSING, and SNOWGLOBE share an action rather than a subject. Hairspray and salad dressing are shaken before use; a Magic 8 Ball and snow globe are shaken for their expected effect.

Blended proper names
A portmanteau is a word formed by combining parts of other words. Recognizing the label helps identify the intended connection among JAZZERCISE, PARALYMPICS, POKÉMON, and WIKIPEDIA. The group is presented as the puzzle’s proper-name portmanteaux; avoid treating that label as a full explanation of each name’s history.

Friend words at the end
The last four entries work by suffix: KETCHUM ends in CHUM, PAYPAL in PAL, PRIMATE in MATE, and ROSEBUD in BUD. Read as whole words, the entries look unrelated; their final fragments supply the shared meaning.

A practical way to check a Connections solution
When a possible group seems plausible, verify that exactly four entries fit the same rule and that the rule is specific enough to exclude the other words. For this board, the categories rely on four different kinds of connection: a shared idea, a shared action, word formation, and a meaningful ending. A completed solution uses all sixteen entries once, with four entries in each group.
