How Connections works

The New York Times Help Center explains that players sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded by difficulty, from Yellow (easiest) to Purple (trickiest); each puzzle has exactly one solution, though apparent overlaps between words can make the groupings challenging. The words and categories are curated by editors using the Oxford Dictionary. NYT Help Center: Connections.

Playing the daily puzzle and the archive

Connections is available through NYT platforms and releases daily at midnight in the player’s timezone. The Help Center says the game is free to play without registration; signing into an account can preserve progress across devices. The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, and access is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archive attempts affect listed game statistics but do not count toward current or maximum streaks. Service details can change, so consult the official Connections help page for the latest access information.
