- Purple: Each word can come before “glass” in a glassware term.
Connections #743 answers
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Kinds of jeans | BOYFRIEND, FLARE, MOM, SKINNY |
| Green | Fiction categories | HISTORICAL, LITERARY, SPECULATIVE, YOUNG ADULT |
| Blue | Words in Hemingway titles | BELL, FAREWELL, OLD MAN, SUN |
| Purple | ___ glass glassware | COCKTAIL, COLLINS, OLD FASHIONED, SHOT |
Why the purple group is tricky
COCKTAIL, COLLINS, and OLD FASHIONED can all suggest drinks, making a cocktail-themed grouping seem plausible. But the complete set points to glassware: cocktail glass, Collins glass, old-fashioned glass, and shot glass. That phrase-completion link accounts for all four words.

How the Hemingway clues fit
The blue words appear in Hemingway titles: “Bell” in For Whom the Bell Tolls, “Farewell” in A Farewell to Arms, “Old Man” in The Old Man and the Sea, and “Sun” in The Sun Also Rises. The category is based on words in those titles, not on a broader literary theme.
A solving approach for this board
Start with the more direct links: the clothing terms and fiction labels. For any remaining words, treat a plausible grouping as a hypothesis rather than a solution: test whether all four items fit, and look for a more precise connection across the board. Here, the drinks association does not explain SHOT as neatly as the glassware phrases do. Connections asks players to sort 16 terms into four groups of four; some boards rely on phrase completion or less obvious references, so checking every word against the proposed theme matters. Research on lateral-thinking puzzles describes how such puzzles can require moving beyond an initially obvious interpretation.
