How to spot the phrase pattern

Try placing FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, or LAST before each word. Some combinations are immediately familiar, such as first aid and Last Supper; the harder work is checking that all four words in a group complete phrases with the same position word.

Why PARTY can mislead

PARTY may look like it belongs with LAST because “last party” sounds plausible, and “final straw” can draw attention toward STRAW. But the intended phrase is “last straw,” so STRAW belongs in LAST. PARTY instead makes “third party,” joining EYE, RAIL, and ROCK in THIRD.

What “third rock” means

“Third rock” refers to Earth as the third planet from the Sun. That completes the THIRD set alongside third eye, third party, and third rail.
