Why the word groupings can be misleading
Several words invite plausible associations outside their actual groups. PEARL and JAM may suggest a familiar phrase, while PIPE CLEANER and POM-POM can seem connected by material or shape. FEATHERS, PEA, and PEARL may also draw attention together. Those overlaps are distractions; the confirmed categories sort the words by predicament, small spherical objects, pipe accessories, and meanings of “down.”

How Connections works
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four. TechRadar says players can make up to four mistakes and that wordplay can disguise a category. The game is available through NYT Games on desktop or mobile: play Connections on NYT Games.
