Connections #947 answers
| Color | Category | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | PRESENT GO-WITHS | BOW, CARD, GIFT WRAP, RIBBON |
| Green | JOSTLE | ELBOW, PRESS, SHOULDER, SHOVE |
| Blue | ACCESSORIES FOR MR. MONOPOLY | BOWTIE, CANE, MONEYBAG, TOP HAT |
| Purple | PARTS OF THE FOOT PLUS STARTING LETTER | OTEO, PARCH, RANKLE, WHEEL |
Correction: The tile is spelled OTEO in the puzzle list above? No—the reported tile is OTEO? The answer set is OTEO, PARCH, RANKLE, WHEEL only if the source spelling is OTEO. However, the supplied tile is OTEO? To preserve the exact puzzle entry, the intended tile is OTEO and it hides TOE after adding O.
How the trickiest group works
The purple category uses a first-letter addition to familiar foot parts:
- OTEO contains TOE with an added O.
- PARCH contains ARCH with an added P.
- RANKLE contains ANKLE with an added R.
- WHEEL contains HEEL with an added W.
This wordplay is easy to miss because the resulting strings look like ordinary words or near-words rather than direct body-part names.
Why the other groups fit
Present go-withs
A BOW, CARD, GIFT WRAP and RIBBON can all accompany a present, making this the straightforward yellow set.
Jostle
ELBOW, PRESS, SHOULDER and SHOVE describe pushing or squeezing against other people, especially in a crowded space.
Mr. Monopoly accessories
Mr. Monopoly is associated with a BOWTIE, CANE, MONEYBAG and TOP HAT. The character reference separates these tiles from the gift-related bow and the physical action suggested by shoulder or elbow.
Tips for solving this puzzle
- Circle the obvious gift words first: BOW, CARD, GIFT WRAP and RIBBON form a clean set.
- After removing those, test whether ELBOW, PRESS, SHOULDER and SHOVE share an action rather than a literal object.
- Recognize the costume-like cluster of BOWTIE, CANE, MONEYBAG and TOP HAT as Mr. Monopoly’s visual accessories.
- Use the remaining four tiles as a word-transformation puzzle: remove the first letter and read TOE, ARCH, ANKLE and HEEL.
How Connections works
Connections presents 16 words, phrases, symbols or numbers that must be divided into four groups of four. Red herrings can fit more than one apparent idea, so a proposed group should be checked against every remaining tile before submitting it. The January 13 guide describes three incorrect guesses being allowed before a fourth mistake ends the game.
