Spoilers below: the complete categories and answers are listed here.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | TRICKY | COMPLEX, DELICATE, STICKY, TOUGH |
| Green | STATE OF AFFAIRS | DEAL, SITUATION, STATUS, STORY |
| Blue | CLASSIC BOARD GAMES | MASTERMIND, MOUSE TRAP, OPERATION, SORRY |
| Purple | _____ TALK | BABY, PILLOW, SMALL, SWEET |
Why the groups fit
Yellow: TRICKY
COMPLEX, DELICATE, STICKY and TOUGH can each describe a difficult or tricky matter.
Green: STATE OF AFFAIRS
DEAL, SITUATION, STATUS and STORY can each refer to the circumstances or state of affairs. The clue phrasing is “How things are.”
Blue: CLASSIC BOARD GAMES
MASTERMIND, MOUSE TRAP, OPERATION and SORRY are the intended set. Forbes notes that MASTERMIND does not literally have a board, though it belongs to the same pre-video-game tradition as the other games; that is a nuance about the category wording, not a different answer.
#1 Best Overall
Purple: _____ TALK
Add “talk” after each word: baby talk, pillow talk, small talk and sweet talk. The shared phrase pattern makes this the wordplay group.

Connections presents 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four. Red herrings can make a word appear to fit more than one category. According to Forbes’ guide, players may make three incorrect guesses before a fourth wrong guess ends the game.
