Green: FUNDAMENTAL

ESSENTIAL, KEY, PRINCIPAL and STAPLE can each describe something fundamental or necessary.

Blue: TRANSFER

GIVE, HAND, PASS and SEND are verbs for transferring something to someone else.

Purple: LIGHT-UP SIGNS

APPLAUSE, EXIT, RECORDING and WALK are words that can appear on illuminated signs.

Words that can mislead

PRINCIPAL and PASS may suggest school, while STAPLE and KEY can evoke school or office supplies. The distinction is that only PEN, RULER, SCISSORS and TAPE are literal supplies; the other words fit better as synonyms for something fundamental or as transfer verbs.
