PATTERNS
CAMO, CHECKERS, HONEYCOMB, and STRIPES are visual patterns.
“___ PIE”
CHESS, CUTIE, HUMBLE, and WHOOPIE each make a phrase when followed by “pie”: chess pie, cutie pie, humble pie, and whoopie pie.
Rank #2
The CHESS and CHECKERS trap
CHESS and CHECKERS look like a natural board-game pair, but that is the misdirection. CHESS belongs in “___ PIE”; CHECKERS is a pattern alongside CAMO, HONEYCOMB, and STRIPES. Keeping those two words in their actual groups resolves the tempting alternate connection.
Hints without the full answer key
- One group is about cheeky behavior; another collects words for reducing an effect.
- Look for a set of visual designs, and be careful not to treat CHESS and CHECKERS as a pair.
- The final group shares a word that follows each of its four entries.
