Connections #353 answers for May 29, 2024

Category Words Connection
FOOD CHOW, EATS, FARE, GRUB Each can refer to food or a meal.
PILOT DIRECT, GUIDE, LEAD, STEER Verbs for directing or guiding movement.
INTIMIDATE BULLY, COW, DAUNT, RATTLE Words for frightening, threatening, or unsettling someone.

The livestock red herring

The tempting cluster is BULL, COW, STEER, and STOCK: all can evoke livestock or cattle. But they split across three categories. COW belongs with the words meaning intimidate; STEER goes with the verbs for directing movement; BULL and STOCK complete phrases with MARKET. The category is not “animals” or “livestock”—it is phrase completion.

How the groups work

FOOD

CHOW, EATS, FARE, and GRUB are informal or general terms for food or a meal.

PILOT

DIRECT, GUIDE, LEAD, and STEER share the action of directing someone or something along a course. In this group, “pilot” is a verb-like idea, not a person who flies an aircraft.

INTIMIDATE

BULLY, COW, DAUNT, and RATTLE can all describe frightening or unsettling someone. “Cow” is used as a verb here: to intimidate or make someone afraid.

___ MARKET

BULL, FLEA, MEAT, and STOCK each form a familiar expression when placed before MARKET: bull market, flea market, meat market, and stock market.
