Actions in fantasy sports
BENCH, DRAFT, START, TRADE
Sci-fi movies with “The”
ABYSS, FLY, MATRIX, THING
Why the tricky groups fit
The purple set works when “The” comes before every word: The Abyss, The Fly, The Matrix, and The Thing. DUNE and GRAVITY are also film titles, which can make a movie-based grouping seem plausible, but the shared “The” construction singles out the intended four.
IMPORT is the tempting near-fit in the fantasy-sports set: it can suggest bringing or moving something, especially alongside DRAFT and TRADE. But the category is about managing a fantasy team, where BENCH, DRAFT, START, and TRADE are the relevant actions. IMPORT belongs with GRAVITY, SUBSTANCE, and WEIGHT, all words that can express significance or importance.

A useful way to approach overlapping words
Connections divides sixteen terms into four groups of four, and broad associations can create red herrings. When a set seems almost right, look for a more precise relationship: test whether all four entries fit the same category, check whether adding a word completes familiar phrases or titles, and hold plausible overlaps aside until the stronger pattern becomes clear. The New York Times Connections overview describes the puzzle’s four-group format and red-herring context.
The answer groups above are independently reported by Parade’s September 27, 2024 guide and TechRadar’s guide to game #474; these are publisher answer guides, not an official NYT answer record.
