Why the groups fit—and where the decoy lies
Yellow: BURLESQUE WEAR
A boa, corset, garter, and stockings can all be part of burlesque attire.
Green: MESS UP THE SURFACE OF
Scar, score, scrape, and scratch can each mean to mark or damage a surface.
Rank #2
Blue: THEY ROAR
A crowd can roar, as can an engine or a lion. KATY PERRY belongs with them through her song “Roar,” rather than through a biographical connection.

Each tile resembles a dance name after changing one vowel: mambo becomes MAMBA, merengue becomes MERINGUE, samba becomes SIMBA, and tango becomes TANGY.
Rank #3
The Lion King false lead
SCAR, SIMBA, and LION look like a tempting shared set because of The Lion King. They do not belong together here: SCAR is green, SIMBA is purple, and LION is blue. Test a suspected connection against a complete group of four before committing to it.

Connections asks players to sort sixteen words into four groups of four. A game overview describes yellow as the most straightforward color and purple as the hardest; players can make up to four mistakes, according to Try Hard Guides.
Rank #4
- Scan all sixteen tiles for pairs or trios that could share a rule, then see whether each can be completed into a set of four.
- Keep obvious associations, such as the apparent Lion King cluster, provisional until every tile fits the same rule.
- If a word seems out of place, consider more than its most familiar meaning. KATY PERRY points to a song title here, while MAMBA suggests a one-vowel change from a dance name.
The date and puzzle number identify this as the April 16, 2025 game—not a puzzle published on April 16 in a different year. TechRadar and Try Hard Guides report the same four categories and tile assignments; the listed answer guides are not an official NYT answer page.
