Hints for NYT Connections on April 14

- Yellow: Prevent.
- Green: Sold out.
- Blue: Pioneer life strategy.
- Purple: A word in the blue group is the common thread.
Connections #673 answers
Spoiler warning: The four solved groups are below.
Yellow: RESTRICT
BLOCK, CHECK, DAM, STOP
Each word can mean to prevent, hold back or restrict something. “Dam” works as a barrier, while “check” can mean stopping or restraining progress.
Green: TICKETED EVENTS
CONCERT, GAME, MOVIE, PLAY
These are events or entertainment experiences for which people may buy tickets. The broad wording is intentional: “game” can refer to a ticketed sporting event, and “movie” to a cinema showing.

#1 Best Overall
Blue: ASSOCIATED WITH THE GAME THE OREGON TRAIL
DYSENTERY, FORD, HUNT, OXEN
These words evoke the historical video game The Oregon Trail. Players dealt with illnesses such as dysentery, hunted for food, used oxen to pull the wagon and chose when to ford rivers.
Purple: WHAT “FORD” MIGHT REFER TO
ACTOR, CAR, DIRECTOR, PRESIDENT
“Ford” is the connector and the puzzle’s main trap. It can suggest an actor such as Harrison Ford, the Ford car brand, a director with Ford as a surname, or President Gerald Ford. Because FORD also belongs in the Oregon Trail group, placing it too early can make the final category difficult to see.
How to solve this puzzle without falling for the trap
- Start with the clearest restriction words: BLOCK, CHECK, DAM and STOP.
- Look for things commonly bought with tickets: CONCERT, GAME, MOVIE and PLAY.
- After those sets are removed, recognize the Oregon Trail references: DYSENTERY, FORD, HUNT and OXEN.
- Use the remaining words to identify the Ford-related references: ACTOR, CAR, DIRECTOR and PRESIDENT.
The key technique is to delay committing FORD. Connections often uses one word that appears to fit two plausible categories; here, FORD is both an Oregon Trail reference and the bridge to the purple group.
