How NYT Connections works

Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four that share a theme. The groups use four colors—yellow, green, blue, and purple—with yellow intended as the easiest and purple as the trickiest. The New York Times says its editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. Read the official Connections rules and help for details.

The NYT daily game becomes available at midnight in the player’s timezone. The official archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Playing an archive puzzle affects some statistics, but not streaks. NYT lists play through the Games app, the Connections website, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app; check the NYT Help Center for current access details.
