The 16 words in the grid were TALK, PIRATE, PILLAR, PARROT, HAM, QUOTE, CANNONBALL, ANCHOR, SATELLITE, ECHO, CORNERSTONE, JACKKNIFE, BACKFLIP, BACKBONE, BELLYFLOP and REPEAT.

Color Category Words
Yellow Splashy ways to enter a pool BACKFLIP, BELLYFLOP, CANNONBALL, JACKKNIFE
Green Reiterate ECHO, PARROT, QUOTE, REPEAT
Blue Mainstay ANCHOR, BACKBONE, CORNERSTONE, PILLAR
Purple ___ radio HAM, PIRATE, SATELLITE, TALK

A likely red herring

ANCHOR, PIRATE, PARROT and CANNONBALL may look like a set of pirate-ship references. That grouping is misleading: each word belongs to a different solution group. Separating those tempting associations is the key to seeing the intended categories.
