How the game works

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to find four groups of four that share a theme. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is easiest and purple is trickiest. Some words can plausibly fit more than one category, so identifying a tempting overlap is part of the puzzle. The New York Times says editors curate the word lists and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. See the NYT Connections Help Center for its rules and access details.
