How Connections works

Connections presents 16 words. The goal is to sort them into four groups of four that share a connection. The four colors signal relative difficulty, from yellow as the easiest to purple as the trickiest. Words can plausibly fit more than one category, which is part of the challenge.

Where to play and find older puzzles

The New York Times says Connections releases daily at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available on the NYT Games website and in the Games and News apps, among other NYT platforms. Its archive reaches back to June 12, 2023. Historical archive play is available to All Access and Games subscribers; archive progress and history require a NYT account, and archive games do not count toward streaks. See the NYT Help Center’s Connections page for current access details.

The Help Center also describes Connections Bot, which provides personalized difficulty, category, mistake, and guess-by-guess statistics for All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers. The Connections Companion forum is open to read and may contain spoilers.
