Spoiler-safe hints for Connections #541
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. The colors run from yellow (easiest) to purple (most difficult).
- Yellow: A Mafia family from a famous television drama.
- Green: Family slang, including what you might call a parent or cousin.
- Blue: Characters from the television home of Elmo.
- Purple: Names whose pronunciations sound like two letters.
You can make up to four mistakes, so check the remaining words after every proposed group instead of submitting the first apparent match.

Answers and categories
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Sopranos characters | CARMELA, JUNIOR, MEADOW, TONY |
| Green | Familial nicknames | CUZ, GRAMMY, MUMMY, POP |
| Blue | “Sesame Street” characters | COOKIE, COUNT, OSCAR, SNUFFY |
| Purple | Names that sound like two letters | CECE, EDIE, EMMY, KATIE |
Yellow: Sopranos characters
CARMELA, JUNIOR, MEADOW, TONY are members of, or closely associated with, the Soprano family in The Sopranos. This is the most direct group once TONY and CARMELA stand out.
Green: Familial nicknames
CUZ, GRAMMY, MUMMY, POP are informal family terms. “Cuz” means cousin, while Grammy, Mummy and Pop are names for grandparents or parents depending on family usage.
Blue: “Sesame Street” characters
COOKIE, COUNT, OSCAR, SNUFFY point to Cookie Monster, the Count, Oscar the Grouch and Mr. Snuffleupagus. The grid uses shortened or partial character names, which makes this group less obvious than the television-title clue suggests.
Purple: Names that sound like two letters
CECE, EDIE, EMMY, KATIE are pronounced like letter pairs: C-C, E-D, M-E and K-T. This is the wordplay-heavy group, so it is best left until the other categories are removed.

A reliable way to solve this grid
- Lock in the Soprano family. CARMELA, JUNIOR, MEADOW and TONY form a distinctive set of names from one show.
- Look for everyday family language. CUZ, GRAMMY, MUMMY and POP fit a shared relationship-based theme.
- Test the children’s television cluster. COOKIE, COUNT, OSCAR and SNUFFY all connect to Sesame Street.
- Use the leftovers for wordplay. CECE, EDIE, EMMY and KATIE become clear when spoken aloud as pairs of letters.
Red herrings to watch for
- OSCAR, GRAMMY and EMMY can all suggest awards. Only OSCAR belongs with the Sesame Street characters, while GRAMMY and EMMY belong to the family-nickname and two-letter-name groups.
- EDIE may look like another entertainment reference, but its sound—“E-D”—is the key to the purple category.
- If five or six words appear to fit one idea, pause and search for an overflow category. Connections often places plausible-but-wrong words together to test whether the category is precise.
How the difficulty builds
The puzzle moves from a recognizable television family (yellow), to familiar family vocabulary (green), to character-name abbreviations (blue), and finally to phonetic letter names (purple). Reading the entries aloud is especially useful for the last group.
