Hints for Connections #204
Try these in order; each clue gets more specific. The board has sixteen words, and the goal is to sort them into four groups of four.
- One group uses words associated with gardening, as nouns or verbs.
- PYRAMID and MILLIONAIRE belong together.
- Another group consists of salad varieties or names.
- For the final group, look for four words that begin with W followed by a vowel sound.
A useful way to work through the board is to scan all sixteen words, jot down partial associations, and look for the fourth word that completes a possible set. The New York Times describes Connections as a game in which players find groups of four words that share something in common; its rules also note that words can appear to fit more than one category.

The sixteen words on the board were WAY, WEED, WHEEL, WEDGE, WATER, WEE, GREEN, FEUD, WHY, PYRAMID, MILLIONAIRE, WHOA, CAESAR, and PLANT. Two contemporary answer guides agree on these groupings; the dated answer key is not published on the NYT Help Center page.
How Connections groups work
The NYT Help Center says: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” Each group receives one of four colors—yellow, green, blue, or purple—with yellow the easiest and purple the trickiest. The official rules say each puzzle has exactly one solution, and that editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.

Can you still play the January 1, 2024 puzzle?
The NYT Help Center says Connections releases daily at midnight in the player’s timezone and that its archive reaches back to June 12, 2023, which includes puzzle #204. The Help Center describes archive access as limited to All Access and Games subscribers; it also says a NYT account is needed to track progress on archived puzzles and that completed archive puzzles cannot be replayed.
