These are the hints and answers for NYT Connections #600, published for Friday, January 31, 2025. Start with the spoiler-light clues below, then open the full groups when you are ready to check the solution.

Hints for Connections #600

NYT Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four that share a connection. The colors mark difficulty: yellow is easiest and purple is trickiest. Some words can seem to fit more than one theme, which is part of the challenge. The New York Times Help Center explains the rules.

  • Green: Nose slang.
  • Blue: They know what they like…
  • Purple: In the pool.

Answers for January 31, 2025

The board’s 16 words were SNOOT, BREAST, FREE, CHEST, BUTTER, SNOB, BACK, EXPERT, BEAK, TRUNK, CRITIC, CASE, CONNOISSEUR, SNOUT, CRATE, and HONKER. The complete groupings are:

  • Yellow — STORAGE CONTAINERS: CASE, CHEST, CRATE, TRUNK.
  • Green — SCHNOZZ: BEAK, HONKER, SNOOT, SNOUT.
  • Blue — ONES WITH DISCERNING TASTES: CONNOISSEUR, CRITIC, EXPERT, SNOB.
  • Purple — STARTS OF SWIMMING STROKES: BACK, BREAST, BUTTER, FREE.

Why the purple group works

Each word starts a swimming-stroke name: BACKstroke, BREASTstroke, BUTTERfly stroke, and FREestyle. TRUNK can also attract attention because it is nose slang, but in this puzzle it belongs with the storage containers: CASE, CHEST, and CRATE.
