Hints for Connections #573
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the most straightforward, followed by green, blue, and purple.
- Yellow: Think of ways to make something smaller and more compact.
- Green: These items can hold or attach things together.
- Blue: Each can indicate that a task or item is complete.
- Purple: Look for details in a famous surrealist painting.
Connections #573 answers
Spoilers below. The full board contains SNAP, CLOCK, BRANCH, CROSS, BALL, CHECK, STRIKE, CRUMPLE, WAD, HOOK, BUCKLE, ANT, TICK, SCRUNCH, MELTING, and CLIP.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Crush into a compact shape | BALL, CRUMPLE, SCRUNCH, WAD |
| Green | Fasteners | BUCKLE, CLIP, HOOK, SNAP |
| Blue | Mark as completed | CHECK, CROSS, STRIKE, TICK |
| Purple | Depicted in Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory | ANT, BRANCH, CLOCK, MELTING |
Why the last group is a reference
The purple set is the board’s cultural-reference category: its words point to things depicted in Salvador Dalí’s painting The Persistence of Memory. The other sets use more direct meanings—compressing something, fastening, and marking completion.
