How to approach the trickier connections

Separate the communication verbs

CONTACT, MESSAGE, PING, and TEXT all point to reaching out. Once you spot that set, keep an eye on words that might tempt you into an unrelated group: PING and PONG look like a pair, but PONG belongs with the purple phrase pattern.

Look for a shared word with the purple answers

BATTER, CAN, GARDEN, and PONG each follow “beer.” This is a phrase-completion connection rather than a group of words with the same part of speech or literal meaning.

Read the blue group as a scene

FRUIT, PITCHER, SKULL, and TABLECLOTH make sense together as components of a classic still life. The link is the kind of arrangement they can form, not that the objects are interchangeable.

The May 17, 2024 groups and clues are listed in Tom’s Guide’s archived answer guide and are independently cross-checked against Try Hard Guides’ Connections answers.
