The 16 words are DRAB, BLOW, MISS, SPOKE, TIRE, DUCT, WASTE, FATIGUE, EXHAUST, RIM, KHAKI, HOSE, LOSE, PIPE, HUB, and CAMO.

Color Category Words
Yellow Parts of a wheel HUB, RIM, SPOKE, TIRE
Green Military clothing descriptors CAMO, DRAB, FATIGUE, KHAKI
Blue Used in ventilation DUCT, EXHAUST, HOSE, PIPE
Purple Fail to take advantage of, as an opportunity BLOW, LOSE, MISS, WASTE

Why the groupings can be tricky

Several words invite more than one reading. TIRE and EXHAUST can be read as verbs, while BLOW can suggest other meanings; the intended solution comes from grouping each word by the category or phrase it belongs to. The purple set uses words that can describe failing to take advantage of an opportunity: you can blow, lose, miss, or waste a chance.

How Connections works

Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four based on a shared link. The groups are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple, from easiest to trickiest. The New York Times Help Center notes that words may appear to fit multiple categories, but each puzzle has exactly one solution. The game releases daily at midnight in the player’s timezone, which is why a guide published on July 9 may cover the July 10 puzzle.
