- Yellow: Think of the kind of weather that makes you reach for an umbrella.
- Green: Each word can pair with “on” to mean directly or precisely.
- Blue: Look for different things associated with a three-letter noun; they do not all belong to the same kind of container.
- Purple: Add one letter at the beginning of each word to reveal a body part.
Full answer key: spoiler warning
Spoilers below: The four groups and their words are listed next.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Qualities of a rainy day | COLD, GRAY, WET, WINDY |
| Green | Squarely | DEAD, EXACTLY, RIGHT, SMACK |
| Blue | Contents of a pod | ASTRONAUT, COFFEE, PEA, WHALE |
| Purple | Body part plus a starting letter | BARM, LEAR, RANKLE, SHIP |
Why the words fit
Yellow: Qualities of a rainy day
COLD, GRAY, WET, and WINDY are all conditions associated with a rainy day.
#1 Best Overall
Green: Squarely
Each word can precede “on” in an expression meaning squarely or precisely: dead on, exactly on, right on, and smack on.
Blue: Contents of a pod
The connection uses more than one sense of “pod.” An astronaut may travel in a space capsule or pod; coffee is sold in coffee pods; peas grow in pods; and whales are mammals that belong to the group called cetaceans, sometimes described collectively as a pod. The category label is “Contents of a pod,” but the four words are not all contents of one literal container.
Rank #2
Purple: Body part plus a starting letter
Each word begins with one extra letter: BARM contains ARM after B; LEAR contains EAR after L; RANKLE contains ANKLE after R; and SHIP contains HIP after S.
How Connections works
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. Try to identify the relationship before submitting a group; the game allows up to four mistakes, and the groups range from more straightforward to more difficult.
