|---|---|---|
| Yellow | EXPEDITION | JOURNEY, ODYSSEY, QUEST, VOYAGE |
| Green | HOLD DEAR | ESTEEM, PRIZE, TREASURE, VALUE |
| Blue | Words whose only vowel is “y” | MYRRH, NYMPH, RHYTHM, SPHYNX |

Why the groups fit
Yellow: EXPEDITION
JOURNEY, ODYSSEY, QUEST, and VOYAGE can each describe or suggest a trip.
#1 Best Overall
Green: HOLD DEAR
ESTEEM, PRIZE, TREASURE, and VALUE can all mean to regard or cherish highly.
Blue: Words whose only written vowel is “y”
MYRRH, NYMPH, RHYTHM, and SPHYNX each contain y as their only written vowel. This is a spelling pattern, not a claim about how y is pronounced in every word.
Rank #2
Purple: Names ending in “k” plus word
Each entry can be split into a common name ending in “k” and another word: FRANK + INCENSE, JACK + POT, MARK + DOWN, and NICK + NAME.
Why some words can seem to fit more than one group
Connections is designed to make words appear to belong to multiple categories. The New York Times Help Center says each puzzle has exactly one solution and that its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. In this grid, a word’s semantic fit may tempt you toward a journey or “hold dear” group, while the spelling or wordplay pattern points elsewhere. The answer is the single four-by-four partition that accounts for all 16 words.
