Hints for Connections #339

Try grouping the 16 words before opening the answer key. These clues move from broad to more specific:

  1. A formal legislative action.
  2. Open grassy land.
  3. Candor or a plainspoken manner.
  4. Car-company names with one letter missing.

Answers for May 15, 2024

The four groups are listed below by category. The words are the puzzle tiles as presented.

Color Category Words
Yellow BIT OF LEGISLATION ACT, BILL, MEASURE, RESOLUTION
Green GRASSLAND MEADOW, PLAIN, PRAIRIE, SAVANNA
Blue FORTHRIGHT DIRECT, FRANK, OPEN, STRAIGHT
Purple CAR COMPANIES MINUS LETTER AURA, BUCK, DOGE, HODA

Why the groups fit

Yellow: BIT OF LEGISLATION

ACT, BILL, MEASURE, and RESOLUTION can each refer to legislation or a formal legislative action.

Green: GRASSLAND

MEADOW, PLAIN, PRAIRIE, and SAVANNA are types of open grassy landscape. PLAIN is the overlap trap: it also fits the idea of being straightforward or plainspoken.

Blue: FORTHRIGHT

DIRECT, FRANK, OPEN, and STRAIGHT can all describe candor or a candid, plainspoken manner.

Purple: CAR COMPANIES MINUS LETTER

Each tile is one letter short of a car-company name: AURA becomes ACURA by adding C; BUCK becomes BUICK by adding I; DOGE becomes DODGE by adding D; and HODA becomes HONDA by adding N. The spellings are intentional puzzle forms, not typos to correct.
