How Connections works
Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to sort them into four groups of four that share a theme. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the easiest and purple the trickiest. Some words can appear to fit more than one category, so the challenge is to identify the intended shared connection. The New York Times says its editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. Read the official Connections rules and help.
Where to play and replay this puzzle
The daily game is available through the Games app, NYTimes.com, NYTimes.com/theathletic, and the News app, and releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The New York Times currently says Connections is free to play on all platforms. Its archive, which includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, is available to All Access and Games subscribers; May 23, 2025 falls within that stated archive range.
