NYT Connections game #411 for Friday, July 26, 2024, groups words around basic directions, advocating for something, drawbacks, and musical-instrument homophones. Read the hints first to avoid spoilers, then open the answer key when you’re ready.

Hints for Connections #411

Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The category colors run from yellow through green and blue to purple, with purple typically relying on more indirect wordplay. A correct group is removed from the board; a near-match may prompt a “one away” signal, and four incorrect guesses end the game.

  1. Yellow: Think of basic directions.
  2. Green: What might you do for a party, a person, or a candidate?
  3. Blue: Look for words that can mean a negative or disadvantage.
  4. Purple: Listen for words that sound like musical instruments.

Answers for Friday, July 26

Spoilers below. The full 16-word bank is DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, UP, BACK, CHAMPION, ENDORSE, SUPPORT, CON, DING, MINUS, STRIKE, BASE, LIAR, LOOT, and SYMBOL.

Color Category Words
Yellow Basic directions DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, UP
Green Advocate for BACK, CHAMPION, ENDORSE, SUPPORT
Blue Drawback CON, DING, MINUS, STRIKE
Purple Instrument homophones BASE, LIAR, LOOT, SYMBOL

Why the purple group works

The purple set is based on sound rather than spelling. BASE sounds like bass, LIAR like lyre, LOOT like lute, and SYMBOL like cymbal. The written words are not instrument names; each is a homophone of one.

What can trip you up

Several words have broad meanings, so a plausible association is not always the intended category. The four direction words form the most literal set; the green group uses verbs meaning to support or promote, while the blue words express a drawback. Save the sound-alike interpretation for the purple words.
