How the trickier groups fit
The pants words lose their final letter
CAPRI, JEAN, JOGGER, and SLACK are singular forms: each is a kind of pants with the final “s” removed from its familiar plural form.

The New York group is about team members
JET, MET, NET, and RANGER refer to players on New York teams, not names for the city itself.
The author group uses surnames or familiar names
BUTLER, GAY, HOOKS, and WALKER point to Octavia E. Butler, Roxane Gay, bell hooks, and Alice Walker. Butler’s official biography identifies Parable of the Sower as one of her novels and a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1993: Octavia E. Butler’s biography.
