Start with these clues, from the less revealing to the more direct. The order matches the puzzle’s yellow, green, blue, and purple groups.
- What might be readily available for a guest?
- How would you describe two things that are very different from one another?
- Think of certain garments.
- A small change to the beginning of each word makes the last connection clearer.

How the groups connect
Yellow: Items in a linen closet
PILLOWCASE, SHEET, TOWEL, and WASHCLOTH are household linens that may be kept in a linen closet or provided to a guest.

COUNTER, OPPOSITE, POLAR, and REVERSE relate to being diametrically opposed or representing the other side of a contrast.
Blue: Lingerie
GARTER, HOSE, SLIP, and TEDDY are types of lingerie or related garments.

Purple: Card games with first letter changed
Each word becomes a card-game name when its first letter is changed: DIN becomes GIN, FRIDGE becomes BRIDGE, GUMMY becomes RUMMY, and JOKER becomes POKER. The transformation is the group’s shared rule.
What makes the puzzle tricky
The groups use different kinds of connections: household objects, words related to opposites, garments, and a spelling transformation. The first three categories are about what the words mean; the purple group depends on changing a letter and recognizing the resulting card-game names. That contrast is an interpretation of the answer key, not a published difficulty rating.

Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four based on a shared connection. The groups are color-coded.
