Why the groups fit
The categories rely on four different kinds of connection: a color, what an object is filled with, a collection of many parts, and an animal name at the end of a phrase. That shift in relationship is what makes the grid tricky: BALLOON ANIMAL can look like it belongs with the animal-themed group, but it fits the air-filled set.
For the red group, think of familiar examples rather than a rule that every example is always red. Fire engines can be yellow, so “traditionally red” is the more precise reading of that clue. Forbes also confirms the four groupings and notes the balloon-animal distraction: Forbes’ explanation of Connections #876.

How Connections works
The New York Times Help Center describes the game this way: “Players are given 16 words and must find groups of four items that share something in common.” The challenge is to identify the intended shared relationship and sort the words into four groups.
The daily game is free to play through supported options such as the Games app and the Connections page on NYTimes.com. The puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The full archive, dating back to June 12, 2023, is available to All Access and Games subscribers, according to the New York Times Help Center’s Connections information. Access terms can change.
