How to solve the grid without burning guesses
The grid contains several tempting overlaps, so look for a complete, unambiguous set before submitting a guess. One practical route is to identify the modal verbs first, then separate the name-like nicknames and finance terms. Reverse the four remaining words to uncover the animal group.
Start with the possibility verbs
CAN, COULD, MAY, and MIGHT all express possibility. MAY is the key decoy: it can look like a month abbreviation, but here it belongs with the modal verbs.
Rank #2
Keep the name forms together
DEB, JAN, KAT, and SUE are short forms of women’s given names. JAN may also look like a month abbreviation; in this puzzle it is a nickname.
Recognize the finance abbreviations
APR, CFO, IRA, and SEC are the finance-related set. APR, JAN, and MAR can initially suggest calendar months, but only APR belongs in this category.
Rank #3
Use reversal on the remaining tiles
When four tiles remain, read each one from right to left. FLOW, GOD, MAR, and TAB spell WOLF, DOG, RAM, and BAT respectively. That makes MAR the third month-looking tile with a different role: it is RAM backward.
