  • Blue: Equipment for table tennis.
  • Purple: Words that sound like coordinating conjunctions.

Connections answers for October 20, 2024

The sixteen words divide into these four groups:

Yellow: Bit of newspaper writing

ARTICLE, COLUMN, FEATURE, STORY

Green: Noisy disturbance

CLATTER, RACKET, ROW, RUCKUS

Blue: Table tennis needs

BALL, NET, PADDLE, TABLE

Purple: Homophones of coordinating conjunctions

BUTT, FORE, OAR, SEW

Why the trickiest groups fit

“Row” means a quarrel or disturbance

In the green group, ROW means a noisy quarrel or disturbance, not a line of objects. That less familiar sense makes it a plausible misdirection word.

The purple group is based on sound

Each purple word sounds like a coordinating conjunction: BUTT like “but,” FORE like “for,” OAR like “or,” and SEW like “so.” The blue group points specifically to table tennis, which helps distinguish its equipment words from other possible associations for terms such as PADDLE.
