Group Category Words
Yellow Yellow ___ CAB, JACKET, JOURNALISM, PAGES
Green Green ___ BERET, GOBLIN, SALAD, THUMB
Blue Blue ___ JAY, JEANS, MOON, WHALE
Purple Purple ___ HAZE, HEART, PROSE, RAIN

How the groups fit together

Every set completes familiar phrases: yellow cab, yellow jacket, yellow journalism, and Yellow Pages; green beret, green goblin, green salad, and green thumb; blue jay, blue jeans, blue moon, and blue whale; purple haze, purple heart, purple prose, and purple rain. The trick is that the color words are not themselves the shared answer group: they are prefixes that reveal the common connection among each set of four.

How Connections works

The New York Times describes Connections as a game in which players sort 16 words into four groups of four sharing a common theme. Its four difficulty colors run from yellow, the easiest, through green and blue to purple, the trickiest. Words can appear to fit more than one group, so finding a plausible connection is not always enough; the challenge is identifying the intended set of four.

The daily game releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The NYT Help Center says the regular game is free to play and that its archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023, for All Access and Games subscribers. October 23, 2024 falls within that archive period; check the live NYT page for current archive access terms.
