Yahoo Tech’s guide offers these clues, from the least revealing to the most direct:

  • Yellow: Decorations for a holiday tree.
  • Green: Photos someone is trying to revamp.
  • Blue: Things one might eat in France.
  • Purple: Think of associations such as biology and Excel.

For shorter nudges, Parade suggests “Deck the halls!” for one group and “Think Julia Child” for another.

  1. What you might see on a Christmas tree: ANGEL, CANDY CANE, STRING LIGHTS, TINSEL.
  2. Clean up, as a photograph: AIRBRUSH, FIX, PHOTOSHOP, TOUCH UP.
  3. French food words: CORNICHON, PAIN, PAMPLEMOUSSE, VINAIGRETTE.
  4. Things with cells: HONEYCOMB, ORGANISM, SOLAR PANEL, SPREADSHEET.

Why the final group is “things with cells”

The purple connection uses “cells” in several senses: a honeycomb has a cell structure, an organism is made of biological cells, a solar panel contains photovoltaic cells, and a spreadsheet is divided into cells.

Parade and Yahoo Tech both identify this as puzzle #816 for Thursday, September 4, 2025, and report the same four groups. Their guides are secondary publications; an official NYT answer page was not available among the sources for this guide. Yahoo Tech also notes that Connections appears at midnight in each time zone, which makes the date and puzzle number more useful than calling this archived puzzle “today’s.”
