NYT Connections game #434 was published Sunday, August 18, 2024. Start with the spoiler-light hints below, then open the answer section when you’re ready to see the four groups and their words.

Hints for Connections #434

Connections asks players to find themes linking words. For this archived puzzle, the hints move from a broad nudge toward the exact categories.

  1. Light nudge: Think about waking up, suggesting an idea, sweets, and familiar animated characters.
  2. Clearer clues: One group is associated with an alarm clock; another consists of phrases that introduce a possibility. The remaining groups involve small candies and names that need trimming.
  3. Final nudge: For the trickiest group, think of four of the Seven Dwarfs, then remove the last letter from each name.

Answers for Connections #434

Spoilers below. The four category labels and word groups for August 18, 2024 are:

  • Yellow — ALARM CLOCK BUTTONS: ALARM, HOUR, SNOOZE, TIME SET.
  • Green — HERE’S A THOUGHT…: PERHAPS, SAY, SUPPOSE, WHAT IF.
  • Blue — CANDY PIECES: KISS, NERD, RUNT, WHOPPER.
  • Purple — SEVEN DWARFS MINUS LAST LETTER: DO, DOPE, GRUMP, SLEEP.

Why the purple group fits

The purple words are shortened versions of four Seven Dwarfs names: Doc becomes DO, Dopey becomes DOPE, Grumpy becomes GRUMP, and Sleepy becomes SLEEP. The set uses each name with its final letter removed.
