This is NYT Connections game #420, published for Sunday, August 4, 2024—not a puzzle from another year. TechRadar and Forbes identify the same game and solution.
How NYT Connections works
Connections asks you to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared link. The groups are marked by different difficulty colors. TechRadar says players can make up to four mistakes and that the game is playable free on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile. TechRadar’s game guide provides that gameplay context.
Progressive hints for game #420
Try the hints in order, stopping when you have enough to solve the grid.
- One group consists of informal ways to address a young person.
- Another group describes being willing, agreeable, or ready to join in.
- For a spelling-based group, look at the first two letters of each word.
- For the last group, put “the” before each word and think of names for the sea.
Full Connections answers for August 4, 2024
The grid was SPORT, DRINK, BLUE, OOZE, DOWN, LLAMA, TIGER, GAME, DEEP, CHAMP, BRINY, EERIE, AMENABLE, AARDVARK, BUDDY, and WILLING. The four groups, confirmed by both TechRadar and Forbes, are:
#1 Best Overall
- Yellow — KIDDO: BUDDY, CHAMP, SPORT, TIGER.
- Green — UP FOR IT: AMENABLE, DOWN, GAME, WILLING.
- Blue — BEGINNING WITH DOUBLE LETTERS: AARDVARK, EERIE, LLAMA, OOZE.
- Purple — NICKNAMES FOR THE SEA, WITH “THE”: BLUE, BRINY, DEEP, DRINK.
Why the groups fit—and where the traps are
Yellow: KIDDO
BUDDY, CHAMP, SPORT, and TIGER can all be used informally when addressing someone young. “Tiger” is the potential distraction: it belongs with the other terms of address, not with the sea-related words.
Green: UP FOR IT
AMENABLE, DOWN, GAME, and WILLING all describe someone ready or agreeable to participate. “Down” is used here in the sense of being up for something, rather than as a direction or mood.
Rank #2
Blue: BEGINNING WITH DOUBLE LETTERS
AARDVARK begins AA, EERIE begins EE, LLAMA begins LL, and OOZE begins OO. The connection is their spelling, not their meanings.
Purple: NICKNAMES FOR THE SEA, WITH “THE”
Read each word after “the”: the blue, the briny, the deep, and the drink. In this set, DRINK is not grouped by its usual meaning as a beverage; it completes the sea-name pattern.
