Hints for Connections #728

The puzzle’s published hints, in order, were:

  1. Relentless
  2. Wildlife traders
  3. Part of the biog
  4. Sounds like dollars

Category names

Spoilers begin here: the four categories are:

  • PERSIST
  • ANIMAL METAPHORS IN ECONOMICS
  • SIDEBAR INFO ON A PERSON’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE
  • HOMOPHONES OF SLANG FOR MONEY

Full answers for game #728

Spoilers: these are the complete groups and their words.

Color Category Words
Yellow PERSIST HOLD, LAST, STAND, STAY
Green ANIMAL METAPHORS IN ECONOMICS BEAR, BULL, DOVE, HAWK
Blue SIDEBAR INFO ON A PERSON’S WIKIPEDIA PAGE BORN, EDUCATION, OCCUPATION, SPOUSE
Purple HOMOPHONES OF SLANG FOR MONEY BRED, CACHE, DOE, LUTE

Why the purple group works

The purple set depends on pronunciation: BRED sounds like “bread,” CACHE like “cash,” DOE like “dough,” and LUTE like “loot.” Those are slang terms for money, making the connection sound-based rather than a match in spelling.

How Connections works and how to replay this puzzle

In Connections, players sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest. The New York Times Help Center notes that words may seem to fit multiple categories, even though each puzzle has exactly one solution. Read the NYT Connections help article.

Connections is available on the NYT Games website and in the Games and News apps. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone, and the Help Center says it is free to play on all platforms. The full archive is available to eligible All Access and Games subscribers; it reaches back to June 12, 2023, and archive play does not affect current or maximum streaks. Check your account and NYT platform for current archive access.
