Full answers for June 9, 2024
Spoiler warning: The complete solutions are below.
- Yellow — FEELING SOME TYPE OF WAY: BITTER, SALTY, SORE, UPSET
- Green — THROW HERE AND THERE: PEPPER, SCATTER, SPRINKLE, STREW
- Blue — ___ POTATO: BAKED, COUCH, HOT, SWEET
- Purple — THINGS WITH LAYERS: CAKE, EARTH, ONION, PLYWOOD
Why the word overlaps can mislead
BITTER, SWEET, and SALTY may look like a taste-based set, but SWEET belongs with the potato phrases, while BITTER and SALTY group with SORE and UPSET. PEPPER can also pull attention toward food, even though it belongs with the words meaning to scatter or spread things here and there. Those overlaps make it useful to check whether a tempting set accounts for all four words cleanly before locking it in.
