Why the groups can be tricky
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The puzzle can signal that three submitted words belong together without revealing the category; four incorrect guesses end the game. A paper describing the game’s structure notes the usual difficulty progression from yellow as easiest through green and blue to purple as hardest (arXiv paper).
Several tiles have multiple plausible associations. MINE, RESERVE, STORE, and WELL fit the idea of supply or sources. BAH, COAL, GRINCH, and NAUGHTY evoke an anti-Christmas theme. The Spanish group is ELLA, GUSTO, MAYO, and SOY. These overlapping associations make it useful to look for a complete set of four rather than committing to a word’s first meaning.
