Why the word groups can mislead
The words can suggest plausible connections beyond their intended sets. MATE and PARTNER point toward the “other half” group, while BUD and PAL can look like a pair of informal terms for a friend. The answer key separates them: MATE and PARTNER go with COMPLEMENT and MATCH, while BUD belongs with the familiar beer names and PAL completes “pay pal.”

Forbes, TechRadar, and Parade independently reported the same solution. TechRadar’s writer described personally guessing MATE, BUD, PAL, and PARTNER together; that is one writer’s account, not evidence of a general solving pattern.
How Connections works
The game presents 16 words to sort into four groups of four. An incorrect guess costs a life, and four mistakes end the game. Forbes’ 2024 guide described a new puzzle arriving at midnight and play through the NYT website or Games app; TechRadar also described desktop and mobile play. Those 2024 descriptions do not establish current access or subscription terms.
