NYT Connections puzzle #522, for Thursday, November 14, 2024, groups its words around depletion, passionate music-making, restaurant-receipt terms, and forms of sugar. Try the graduated hints below before opening the full solution.

Hints for Connections #522

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared connection. These graduated hints are from TechRadar’s November 14 guide, rather than official NYT clue text. TechRadar’s dated guide and Parade’s guide offer alternate phrasings for the same ideas.

  1. Yellow: Use up.
  2. Green: “I’m really feeling this, man.”
  3. Blue: Service not included.
  4. Purple: The sweetest thing.

All 16 words on the board

The board contains GRAIN, DRAIN, TOTAL, CUBE, SYRUP, SHRED, SIGNATURE, SAP, JAM, TAX, POWDER, ROCK, EMPTY, GROOVE, TIP, and EXHAUST. Pause here if you want to solve it yourself before seeing the categories.

Spoiler warning: the full answer

The four groups and their words are listed below.

Yellow — DEPLETE

  • DRAIN
  • EMPTY
  • EXHAUST
  • SAP

Green — PLAY MUSIC WITH PASSION

  • GROOVE
  • JAM
  • ROCK
  • SHRED

Blue — WORDS ON A RESTAURANT RECEIPT

  • SIGNATURE
  • TAX
  • TIP
  • TOTAL

Purple — FORMS OF SUGAR

  • CUBE
  • GRAIN
  • POWDER
  • SYRUP

How the grouping works

The depletion set pairs verbs and related words that can mean using up or draining a supply. The music set uses informal expressions for playing with energy or skill: groove, jam, rock, and shred. The receipt group collects familiar line items or details, while the sugar group spans cube, grain, powder, and syrup forms.

TechRadar, Parade, and Try Hard Guides publish the same four word assignments for this date. The New York Times game page was not accessible for direct archive verification, so these answers are cross-checked against those guides rather than confirmed from the NYT archive. Try Hard Guides’ November 14 answer guide independently matches the groups.
