How the daily puzzle and archive work

Connections presents 16 words and asks players to sort them into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center describes the colors as progressing from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest, and says each puzzle has exactly one solution. Its guidance notes that words may seem to fit multiple categories, which is part of the challenge. The editors use Oxford Dictionary as a reference when curating words and categories. The New York Times Help Center’s Connections guide says the game is free to play on NYT game platforms without registration; an account can sync progress. It also says the daily game releases at midnight in the player’s timezone, so “today’s” puzzle can differ between locations at the same moment.

The Help Center says the archive extends back to June 12, 2023, and access to the full archive is limited to All Access and Games subscribers. These are the terms stated in its current guidance and may change. This third-party answer guide is separate from access to NYT’s game or archive.
