The full Connections #912 solution
The grid contained these sixteen entries: DOROTHY GALE, CLOWNFISH, TOUCAN, PRIDE, LEPRECHAUN, HONEYBEE, WONDER, TIGER, COUNT, ZEBRA, FOREHEAD, FACTOR, FIEVEL, CONSIDER, UNICORN, and INCLUDE.
| Color | Category | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | BEAR IN MIND | CONSIDER, COUNT, FACTOR, INCLUDE | Each can mean taking something into account while assessing a situation. |
| Green | STRIPED ANIMALS | CLOWNFISH, HONEYBEE, TIGER, ZEBRA | Each animal has striped or banded markings. |
| Blue | ASSOCIATED WITH RAINBOWS | DOROTHY GALE, LEPRECHAUN, PRIDE, UNICORN | The links are cultural or symbolic: “Over the Rainbow,” a leprechaun’s pot of gold at a rainbow’s end, the rainbow Pride flag, and the phrase “rainbows and unicorns.” |
| Purple | BEGINNING WITH NUMBER HOMOPHONES | FIEVEL, FOREHEAD, TOUCAN, WONDER | The opening sounds evoke five, four, two, and one, respectively: FIEVEL/five, FOREHEAD/four, TOUCAN/two, WONDER/one. |
How to read the trickier connections
The rainbow group uses different kinds of references
The blue set does not share one literal trait. Dorothy Gale points to the song “Over the Rainbow”; the leprechaun link is the folklore image of a pot of gold at a rainbow’s end; PRIDE refers to the rainbow flag; and UNICORN completes the familiar “rainbows and unicorns” expression. Recognizing that the category gathers varied associations, rather than identical objects, makes the group easier to see.
The purple group is about sound, not spelling
Read the first syllable or sound of each entry aloud: FIEVEL begins like “five,” FOREHEAD like “four,” TOUCAN like “two,” and WONDER like “one.” The number connection is phonetic; the words do not begin with the corresponding number spellings.
