How the trickier groups work
Yellow: “four-letter words” is an expression
FOUR-LETTER and WORDS are separate tiles in the grid; together they form the phrase FOUR-LETTER WORDS. The category groups that expression with EXPLETIVES, PROFANITY, and SWEARING as terms for curses or profane language. It is not a literal clue that the answers themselves all have four letters.

CHRISTMAS, HOUSE, MOUSE, and STIRRING point to lines in “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” The connection is the poem, rather than Christmas-related words in general.
#1 Best Overall
Blue: Earring Magic Ken’s outfit
EARRING, MESH SHIRT, NECKLACE, and PLEATHER VEST are presented as items worn by Earring Magic Ken. TechRadar describes the doll as a Mattel Ken variant from 1992; that historical detail is reported by the guide.
Purple: possessives hidden at the start
The first letters are not the key; the words contain a possessive determiner at the beginning: HER + RING makes HERRING, HIS + TAMINE makes HISTAMINE, MY + STERY makes MYSTERY, and OUR + OBOROS makes OUROBOROS.

Why the puzzle date is September 2
TechRadar published its guide on September 1, 2025, but labeled it for Tuesday, September 2, game #814. The guide explains that a new Connections puzzle appears at midnight in each time zone, so the publication date can differ from the date associated with the puzzle. It says the game is playable through NYT Games on desktop or mobile. The solution above is attributed to that guide; an official NYT historical archive was not independently checked.
