Those clues should narrow the board considerably, but be careful: several entries can look as if they belong in more than one category.
NYT Connections #1025 answers
🟨 Beer brands
- BLUE MOON
- DOS EQUIS
- MILLER HIGH LIFE
- RED STRIPE
All four are commercial beer brands. BLUE MOON and RED STRIPE are particularly deceptive because they can initially look like ordinary phrases involving colors and objects.
🟩 Rock bands
- GREEN DAY
- PINK FLOYD
- THREE DOORS DOWN
- U2
These are rock bands or rock acts. GREEN DAY and PINK FLOYD are recognizable band names, while THREE DOORS DOWN and U2 are less literal constructions that may take longer to identify.

🟦 Movies
- BACK TO THE FUTURE
- BLUE VELVET
- SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN
- TOP GUN
Each is a film title. BLUE VELVET can act as a red herring because it resembles a simple color-and-material phrase rather than a movie title.
🟪 U.S. city nicknames
- BIG APPLE — New York City
- BIG EASY — New Orleans
- MILE HIGH CITY — Denver
- SECOND CITY — Chicago
These are commonly used nicknames for U.S. cities. The purple group may be the least familiar to players outside the United States, especially BIG EASY and SECOND CITY.
Why Connections #1025 was tricky
The puzzle was reported as a relatively manageable 2/5 in difficulty, but its entries were designed to create several plausible wrong paths.
Rank #3
BLUE MOON and RED STRIPE can be read as color-based phrases before they are recognized as beer brands. GREEN DAY and PINK FLOYD clearly point toward music for many players, but THREE DOORS DOWN and U2 require familiarity with band names that do not describe a musical genre or style. BLUE VELVET can be mistaken for another phrase-based connection, and the city-nickname group depends on cultural and geographic knowledge that is not equally familiar to every solver.
The April 1 presentation also gave the puzzle an April Fools context, while the date itself needs to be read carefully: this is the Wednesday, April 1, 2026 edition, puzzle #1025. It is not the April 1, 2025 puzzle, which was #660.

If solving the daily game is not enough, the NYT Connections puzzle book, Connections: Find the Common Threads in 100+ Puzzles of Wit and Wordplay, offers physical puzzles built around the same common-thread format. It is described as the first physical book devoted to Connections and is associated with Wyna Liu, a New York Times puzzle editor. The book is a separate collection of puzzles; there is no basis here to say that it includes puzzle #1025.
How NYT Connections works
Connections gives you 16 words or phrases. Your goal is to arrange them into four groups of four, with each group sharing a common connection. Select four entries and submit your guess. A correct group is removed from the board; an incorrect guess uses one of your four mistakes.
Rank #4
Because the game allows overlapping meanings, the safest approach is to look for a group with four very strong matches rather than immediately committing to a theme that has only two or three possibilities. On this board, identifying the beer brands and rock acts helps separate the entries that merely resemble colors, phrases, or titles.
