Connections #899 answers

Color Category Words
Yellow Verbs expressing possibility CAN, COULD, MAY, MIGHT
Green Women’s nicknames DEB, JAN, KAT, SUE
Blue Financial abbreviations APR, CFO, IRA, SEC
Purple Backwards animals FLOW, GOD, MAR, TAB

Yellow: Verbs expressing possibility

CAN, COULD, MAY, and MIGHT are modal verbs used to express possibility or uncertainty.

Green: Women’s nicknames

DEB, JAN, KAT, and SUE are short forms commonly associated with women’s names. They can represent names such as Deborah, Janet or Janice, Katherine or Kathleen, and Susan or Suzanne.

Blue: Financial abbreviations

APR means annual percentage rate, CFO means chief financial officer, and IRA means individual retirement account. SEC is the familiar abbreviation for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Purple: Backwards animals

Reverse each entry to reveal an animal: FLOW becomes WOLF, GOD becomes DOG, MAR becomes RAM, and TAB becomes BAT.

The month abbreviation red herring

JAN, MAR, APR, and MAY look like they should form a months group. TechRadar’s solving note identifies that as the puzzle’s obvious false lead. APR belongs with the financial abbreviations instead, leaving the apparent month set incomplete.
